What is a Thread Lift?

If you have been looking for a non-surgical face-lift alternative that will leave you with firmer, more youthful looking skin, then a Thread Lift may be for you. Thread Lifting is an innovative facial rejuvenation procedure that uses medical-grade dissolvable sutures placed beneath the surface of your skin to mechanically lift tissues and promote collagen production in treatment area. Treatment benefits include firmer, more youthful looking skin and reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Threads used in a Thread Lift procedure are most commonly made from dissolvable polydioxanone (PDO) and may be smooth, barbed, or have cones depending on your desired results and the quality of your skin.

Thread Lifting results are two-fold: immediate results from mechanical lifting and tightening of the threads beneath your skin, and more gradual results brought on by the natural healing cascade triggered by placement of the threads that helps gradually firm your skin over time.

Thread Lifts are often referred to as a “lunch hour lift” because of the time it takes to complete the procedure and the ability to return to work after it’s completed if you choose to do so. There is no cutting of the skin or use of general anesthesia, making Thread Lifts a minimally invasive procedure.

Who is a good candidate for Thread Lift?

^

Men and women ages 30-50

^

Mild-moderate skin laxity (not severely sagging skin) in mid-lower face and neck

^

Those who want a subtle lift with minimal downtime and no surgical cutting

Who is not a good candidate for Thread Lift?

It’s important to talk to your treatment provider about any possible contraindications to treatment, or if you meet any of the conditions below, as you may still be a good candidate for Thread Lift.

  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised against having a Thread Lift procedure.
  • If you have a known sensitivity to synthetic biomaterials, including dissolvable suture threads and plastic implants, your body may reject the suture material, causing extrusion and/or infection.
  • If you have active cold sores in treatment area, an active sunburn, open wounds, or skin infection in treatment area, it is best to wait until your skin is healed before having a Thread Lift procedure.
  • If you have had radiation treatment in treatment area within the last year or have malignancies in treatment area, a Thread Lift procedure may not be right for you.
  • If you are taking anti-coagulants (such as warfarin or aspirin) or have blood clotting disorders, are taking immunosuppressants or corticosteroids (such as prednisone or Methotrexate), or have an autoimmune disease causing delayed wound healing, including: HIV/AIDs, Lupus, Diabetes, Scleroderma.
  • If you have a history of keloid scars or delayed wound healing, you are not a good candidate for a Thread Lift.

What are the benefits of having a Thread Lift?

Thread Lifts procedures are a great way to tighten and firm your skin without having to go under the knife for a surgical facelift and can be more effective than dermal filler treatments at smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. Thread Lifts are a fairly quick procedure, are more affordable than surgical facelifts, and require minimal downtime and recovery.

Thread Lifting can be combined with other aesthetic treatments to maximize results. Sculptra® is a popular addition to the Thread Lift because it helps to boost collagen production in treatment area and can increase volume, as well as provide additional contouring.

But Honestly…

Does a Thread Lift hurt?

Thread Lift is not generally considered a painful procedure, but there is some discomfort involved, as it requires placing a suture thread under the surface of your skin using a needle and cannula.

Thread Lifts are performed using local anesthesia, which may include use of a topical numbing agent and an injectable numbing agent. You will not be under general anesthesia for this procedure. Thread Lifts are generally not considered painful, but you may experience mild-moderate discomfort when your treatment provider inserts the needle and/or cannula (thin tube containing the thread) underneath the surface of your skin to place the thread.

You may also experience a slight tugging sensation when the thread is tightened to gently lift the tissue.

If you tend to become anxious during medical or dental procedures, especially when needles are used, talk to your treatment provider about additional pain and anxiety relief options- like an anxiolytic or ProNox– that may be available to you during your Thread Lift procedure. Keep in mind that if you take an anxiolytic or receive nitrous oxide during your procedure, you will need to plan to have someone pick you up after your procedure, as you will be unable to drive.

What should I expect during a Thread Lift procedure?

Thread Lifts are minimally invasive and generally require about an hour to complete. Here is what to expect from start to finish:

  • Arrive to your appointment with clean skin that is free of makeup, lotion, and sunscreen in treatment area.
  • Your treatment provider will begin by marking the treatment area with a surgical marker to indicate where the threads will be placed.
  •  Your treatment provider will inject a local anesthetic into the treatment area(s) and may also use a topical numbing cream.
  • After the treatment area has become numb, your treatment provider will insert a long needle and/or cannula below the surface of your skin with the suture thread attached to it. You may experience mild-moderate discomfort during this step.
  • The thread will then be pulled taut beneath the surface of your skin, which will gently lift your tissue. You may experience a tugging and/or pulling sensation while the thread is being pulled and secured.
  • This process will be repeated until all threads have been placed beneath your skin. The number of threads used will be determined by your treatment provider and is based on your skin laxity, skin quality, and your desired results.
  • Once all threads have been placed, your treatment provider will go over the aftercare instructions with you and may provide you with a topical antibiotic cream to use over the thread entry points.
  • You can drive yourself home after the procedure if you have not been given an anxiolytic.

What to expect after a Thread Lift procedure:

Downtime and recovery after a Thread Lift is minimal for most, but can be dependent upon number of threads used and how your body typically responds to procedures. Here is what you can expect after your Thread Lift and aftercare instructions that your provider may suggest:

You may experience bruising and swelling for 7-10 days. You may return to work after the procedure if you feel presentable. Some choose to take a few days off work until they feel “public ready”, but this is not required. Plan to not attend any big events for 2-4 weeks to allow for swelling and bruising to subside.

You may experience discomfort and a pulling sensation at the thread insertion sites for up to 1-3 months. If this pulling sensation becomes bothersome, speak to your treatment provider about your options.

Sometimes, a slight depression or skin irregularity may appear at the insertion points. These typically disappear a few days after treatment.

If eruption of suture thread or signs of infection occur, be sure to call your treatment provider. Signs/Symptoms of infection: Increased redness/pain/warmth or formation of pustules at treatment site.

Thread Lift Aftercare Tips

^

Gently wash the treated area daily, but do not rub or massage for 2 weeks.

^

You can use acetaminophen for discomfort and cold compresses may be used 20 minutes on 20 minutes off to reduce swelling 2-3 times per day during the first 1-2 days, if needed.

^

Sleep with your head elevated at least 30º for the first three nights to help reduce swelling.

^

A soft diet is recommended for the first 3 days post-treatment.

^

Stay hydrated and chew slowly.

^

Do not massage treatment area unless instructed to do so by your provider.

When can I expect to see Thread Lift results?

You may see visible lifting and firming results immediately after treatment. You can expect to see continuing results after several weeks as swelling and bruising subsides. You will see optimal results around 3-6 months after your body’s natural healing cascade has occurred, resulting in increased collagen production in the treatment area, which should provide additional skin firming, tightening, and volume.

How long do results last?

Over the next 6-18 months, your body will begin to dissolve the suture threads. This natural dissolving process helps to boost collagen production in the treatment area. You can expect results to last 1-3 years, depending on your skin quality and your desired outcome. Maintenance treatments are recommended to maintain results every 1-2 years.

It is important to understand that Thread Lift results are not permanent and that your natural aging process will continue. The initial lifting effect will gradually fade and may only last 6-12 months. You will require ongoing treatments and may eventually decide to have a surgical facelift to see more dramatic results.

Is It Dangerous?
